History, characteristics and high point of the trip
The trip to Ranastøngji is a hiking experience of the rarest type. Take your car to Vavatn, where the trip begins. Be aware that the road up to Vavatn is a toll road, and expect to pay a fee of about NOK 40.
The trip goes over varied terrain. To begin with, there are several waterfalls in the stream along the mossy trail to enjoy before you move up in the terrain to where the trail becomes rockier. The last part of the trip is on bare rock, where you follow blue markers all the way to the summit.
The mountain’s characteristic shape makes the trip up to Ranastøgnji very special. The view from the summit of the mountain makes the trip perfect. When standing on the summit and looking out over the landscape, you might briefly think you were in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. However, with the wider view of Jotenheimen, Hurrungane, Vardresfløya there is no doubt that you are at the heart of Norwegian mountains.
On the road down from Ranastøgnji, there is a view into Hydalen, or you might take a short detour to Hydalen after the end of your trip. Here there is a difference in height of 900 metres from bottom to top. Hydalen is protected by legislation[PC1] . The purpose of this protection has been and remains the conservation of the east Norwegian mountain dairy farming valleys including their topography and flora. See grazing animals and rich and diverse flora. Enjoy great opportunities for hiking or try your luck in fine fishing lakes.
