Trip description and history The round trip Toviken – Klevahytta – Iungsdalen – Toviken is in magnificent high mountain terrain, 1090 – 1280 masl, in the Skarvheim mountain area. Since the days of old, several of the most well-used roads between eastern and western Norway have gone through Skarvheimen.
Along the way, you may meet sheep out for summer grazing, or purchase a fishing card before you set out on a trip and try your luck fishing along the way.
Parts of the trip are along the Norwegian Trekking Association’s network of ski tracks. At the top of Kelvahovda (1342 masl) at Klevahytta, there is a magnificent view. You can see both Fødalsvatnet and Klevavatnet with Systrand waterfall in the middle. The area is also home to an exciting historical tale. It was in this mountainous area that the lawless Eiving Gudbrandsgard lived for many years. “In 1719, an argument about property rights in outlying fields ended when Eivind Gulbrandsgard stabbed Ola Øylien to death. Eivind ran off to the mountains and lived – lawless and pursued – in the mountains between Hallingdal and Indre Sogn for many years. He built several small shelters and stone bridges the remains of which we can see today, among others Eivindbotn in Iungsdalen. In 1737, he was found dead, according to the story, shot by a person from Lærdal.”
Tips for Trips The trip ascends quite a bit, at times it is steep and demanding, especially in rainy weather. Along the way, the trip passes Iungsdalshytta, where you may find good local food, overnight accommodation and visit mountain farms (during the season). The trip is suitable for hiking from July through September. There is a parking area by the river Mjølga just before Toviken. If you would prefer a shorter, easier trip, take the round trip Toviken – Iungsdalshytta, along the trail beside Stolsvatnet.
